Remembering Sabu, Former NWA World's Heavyweight Champion
RIP SABU.
The NWA family sends our heartfelt condolences to his family, his friends, and his many, many fans all over the world. And who better to pay tribute to this great champion than his former ECW compatriot Pat Kenney, aka ‘Simon Diamond.”
“Unique. Generational talent. Words that get thrown around too much in pro wrestling but for Sabu, they actually fit, perfectly. A former NWA World’s Heavyweight Champion in 2000, Sabu revolutionized pro wrestling in the mid-90s with his unique, daredevil style. He would use tables, chairs and whatever else he could find to catapult himself through the air as a rocket, causing damage to both his opponent and himself. Yet, there was a lot more to him then he wanted us to know. His respect for his craft was instilled in him by his legendary uncle, The Sheik. His intensity was on full display each and every night, forcing everyone in the locker room to keep up. Nobody ever could. While others 'took a night off,’ Sabu did not. The scars all over his head and body were a testament to this ideology, making him an almost mythical figure. If anyone ever defined the word 'Extreme' it was him. Rest in peace, Sabu. Giant sky point for you."
-PAT KENNEY 5.12.25
Now NWA’s Vice President of Talent Relations, Kenney worked extensively with Sabu during both men’s tenures in ECW. It was a period which came to define Sabu’s 40-plus year career.
A multiple-time champion around the globe, Sabu captured the NWA’s “Ten Pounds of Gold” on Nov. 14, 2000, in Tampa, FL. He held the coveted title for 38 days.
Sabu passed away May 11, 2025 at the age of 60.
